KAB provides resources and education to inspire individuals &
the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

Green Teens LogoMiddle and high School students become a Green Teen and explore the outdoors, the truth about trash, what's in our water, and plant cloning. Discover how to shop eco-friendly and to design a garden, tour a recycling plant, and create edible aquifers and recycled art. Take action in your community to mark storm drains, complete the recycling loop and landscape while earning community service hours. As a Green Teen you can become eligible for a paid summer internship to mentor younger youth.

What is Green Teens:

  • Youth ages 13 and up participate in after-school training to learn about gardening, recycling, alternative energy, and sound environmental practices.
  • Students take ownership of their communities through service projects while earning community service hours.
  • Weekly field trips bring activities to life.
  • Teen leaders become eligible for a paid internship to mentor youth in a summer outreach program.

Results:

Since Green Teens was launched in 2005, the program has become one of KAB's primary educational programs. We have expanded the program from three participating sites to six participating schools annually and the number of youth we reach has tripled from 42 annually to 124!

Green Teens also participate in student showcase days and Saturday workdays to engage community members and families in service projects, and to share their knowledge and brag about their accomplishments.

Our partners speak out about what they like most about Green Teens:

  • "I liked how the program was very hands-on and educated children about various subjects including healthy eating, composting, gardening and insect life."
  • "Thanks again for everything you guys have done for us at Bedichek. It is much appreciated."
  • " The apprenticeship offered the kids many realistic applications of how to 'green' their own lives and involved their families in real ways by having kids provide samples and take information back to their parents and siblings."
  • "Energy level of the instructor and instructional materials is great."
