Green Teens Bedichek Middle SchoolBedichek and Kealing Middle Schools Green Teens at Kealing and Bedichek Middle School is implemented in partnership with Citizen Schools. Students at these sites participate in 10-weeks dedicated to going in depth on a topic. Fall 2010: Boggy Creek Cleaners The Boggy Creek Cleaners of Kealing and Bedichek Middle School dedicated ten weeks to learning about where our drinking water comes from, how important it is to keep it clean, and what makes local waterways polluted. Touching and identifying aquatic bugs was the highlight of the semester and gave students an understanding of how biotic and abiotic parameters help determine if a waterway is clean or polluted. Fieldtrips to Boggy Creek and the LCRA Redbud Center offered a new perspective on the classroom investigations. At the end of the 10 weeks students showcased their knowledge by leading presentations on each topic at the Capitol. Spring 2011: Native Garden Gurus Bedichek & Kealing Middle School Green Teens used their math and science skills this spring to map out and plan a school garden. In the process, they studied and hauled soil, distinguished native versus invasive plants, and toured a local nursery to select plants. Through the process students became vested in their gardens. The Bedichek students restored an existing garden space in their nature-scape area. The students labeled their adopted plants so teachers can explore and identify the garden flora with their students. At Kealing students transformed a once littered area in front of the school into a native plant garden to attract butterflies and birds. The semester culminated with parents and community members teaming up with students to expand the gardens while picking up planting tips from the young experts. With lots of student care to water the gardens they are growing and flourishing. Thank you Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center for the plant donation!
Spring 2010: Hot Wheels Solar Powered! During the spring semester Green Teens at Kealing, and Bedichek Middle School designed and built model solar cars while learning about renewable energy and reuse of materials. Students became ‘Green Warriors’ when they attended class and shared new ways they had learned to conserve energy and creative ways to build their cars out of reused materials On Saturday, May 8th Green Teens from Kealing and Bedichek showcased the model solar cars they designed and built, and then stepped into competitive mode to race their cars. Keeping the competitive spirit students attended a city-wide model solar car race hosted by Applied Materials where they raced their cars against engineers and high school students! ![]() ![]() Fall 2009: Boggy Creek Cleaners For ten weeks students from Kealing and Bedichek Middle Schools studied our creeks and how to protect them. On Saturday, December 5th Green Teens' students led activity booths to showcase their knowledge and enthusiasm for volunteers cleaning up Lady Bird Lake. After the activities students joined volunteers to cleanup Lady Bird Lake. The commitment KAB Green Teens made to care for our creeks was truly amazing. The student led activities were featured in The Daily Texan. ![]()
Spring 2009: Students put their gardening know how to work and reap the harvest.
Spring 2009: Solar Powered Green Teens at Bedichek Junior High embarked on a journey this fall to learn about alternative energy. They got energized about the topic by competing in a game to earn points based on their home energy habits. Green Teens then teamed up to design and build solar-powered model cars. Students previewed their model solar cars durng a family night where guests voted on the most artistic car. Then on December 15th, the sun showed its power blazing over the Bedichek courtyard where student teams reved up to race their cars. Click here to watch a video of race day. Students using their teamwork skills to engineer their model solar cars Guests visiting the gallery of solar cars vote on the car with the best design On your mark, get set, GO... Awards ceremony for Most Artistic Car, Best Teamwork, and of course the Fastest Car ![]() Many thanks to our campus partners, Citizen Schools who provided staff support and class structure, and Austin Energy for their guidance in building the solar model cars. Fall 2008: Boggy Creek Cleaners Through KAB's weekly after-school activities students at Bedichek Middle School studied the impact of litter on water quality and habitats. Aware of the importance of keeping their watershed and creek clean they set out to their local creek to identify sources of pollution and what could be done to reduce the trash entering the creek. Leading by example students cleaned up their local creek. What started out as a commitment to making a difference turned out to be an outdoor adventure of finding interesting "trashy" treasures. At the end of the semester students presented their findings and shared their experiences with family and friends at a WOW - a parent night produced by the students where they teach back to the community. Green Teens at Bedichek and Kealing Middle Schools is led in partnership with Citizen Schools.
Green Teens identify aquatic bugs to determine how clean their water sample is.
Students identified water entering the creek from a stormdrain and then set out to cleanup the creek. Spring 2007: Native Gardeners During the spring semester at Bedichek Middle School Green Teens designed and installed a garden. In the process they learned about native plants, the uses of plants, ecosystems, and mapping, while working as a team and gaining leadership skills.
Green Teens adopted a plant and determined the best location to plant it.
