Tue, 05/04/2010 - 20:55 — brian
KAB partners with schools and after-school organizations to lead weekly environmental education activities to engage low-income youth in environmental stewardship. During the spring semester Green Teens at Kealing, and Bedichek Middle School designed and built model solar cars while learning about alternative energy and reuse of materials. High school students from LBJ, Eastside, and Reagan have been learning about native plants, organic gardening methods, water quality and much more while installing and maintaining native and vegetable garden beds. On Saturday, May 8th at Kealing Middle School, KAB Green Teens led hands on educational activities. Parents, youth, and neighbors gathered to learn something new, meet some brilliant young people, and meet folks who are invested in the education of Austin’s youth! Highlights include: Garden Time - Green Teens from Eastside Memorial High School led a seed planting and shared stories from a semester of gardening. Compost Critters – Visitors explored live worms while LBJ High School’ Green Teens gave the ins and outs of composting. ![]() Hot Wheels - Keep Austin Beautiful apprentices from Kealing and Bedichek Middle Schools showcased the model solar cars they designed and built, race their cars, and shared their knowledge of alternative energy. ![]()
