MLK Day Service Events a Success!
Tue, 01/17/2012 - 17:17 — KAB
Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service 2012 This past Saturday, January 14th through Monday, January 16th, Keep Austin Beautiful was proud to support several service events around Austin in honor of MLK Day. The South East Austin Trails and Greenways Alliance, with some help from College Forward, started off the weekend with a Community Cleanup project at Pleasant Valley Pocket Park. Over 27 volunteers came out to help pick up trash, clear brush, and build trails for our southeast Austin community to enjoy! In east Austin, hundreds of volunteers showed up for the 13th Annual Martin Luther Kind Jr. Blvd Cleanup organized by State Representative Dawnna Dukes, United Way Capital Area and Hands On Central Texas. KAB provided cleanup supplies and coordinated trash collection for the dedicated volunteers who picked up bag after bag of litter along the sides of MLK Blvd between Airport Blvd and Springdale Road. Representative Dukes spoke to the group about the importance of "taking pride in community" and honoring Dr. King with a day of service.
On Monday, at the Montopolis greenbelt, KAB partnered with American Youthworks and Austin Parks Foundation to provide support and volunteers for a large scale cleanup of the greenbelt area behind the Montopolis Practice fields. Thanks to support from Watershed Protection Department, and generous donations of time and assistance from Waste Management and Austin Resource Recovery, we were able to remove a dumpster full of trash and debris as well as a small mountain of tires from the greenbelt area.
Keep Austin Beautiful extends our gratitude to all who came out to lend a helping hand to the community and honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. We are proud to have had the opportunity to contribute and are looking forward to many other successful community events in 2012!
