KAB provides resources and education to inspire individuals &
the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

Brentwood Elementary School

Brentwood makes everyday Earth Day…on Tuesdays and Thursdays Recycling Rangers, students from grades 3-5, at Brentwood can be found picking up and emptying school recycling bins along with providing Earth tips over the school announcements. Friday afternoons’ students can be found gardening. Raw fruits and veggies are collected daily from the cafeteria and 2 composting stations – over 15 pounds of food collected daily! - to maintain the compost piles used for the school gardens. Then every other week the environmental club meets to study topics such as gardening/composting, packaging, the 4 R's, solar energy, Earth Day, and more.

Their daily efforts culminated in one big Earth Day festival with green music by Mr. Pancake, a least-waste lunch contest and Environmental Learning Stations. KAB Activity Kits were utilized for the Recycling, Composting, Beneficial Bugs, and Watershed stations, check out the fun times below.

Spicewood Springs Elementary

Students, teachers, and parents at Spicewood starting preparing for and promoting Earth Day weeks before the event with environmental videos made by students that were played during the morning announcements to encourage walking, biking, car/bus pooling and thus "Saved Fuel to get to School"; and Art Club students painted a mural and made posters to promote Earth Day.

The Big Day, Earth Day, started off with the "Green Team" greeting the many bicyclists, bus riders, and carpoolers.  The bike rack was filled!  Almost all of the 1st graders among others walked to school in a grand procession!  Spicewood students also brought in enough aluminum cans, plastic bottles and plastic bags to fill 4 large KAB Event Recycling Bins.  Then 5th grade students in collaboration with volunteers helped in the Science Lab to "teach" the younger grades about Environmental issues using KAB Activity Kits. Kids agree earth worms and ladybugs are fun!

Kudos to Spicewood students, parents and teachers for their Earth Day celebrations and raising awareness about what is happening to our planet!
