Austin Discover School Austin Discovery School has been a winner of the Longhorn Recycle Roundup for several years for their outstanding efforts to green their campus. One of these efforts includes plastic and aluminum recycling headed by students... Summitt Elementary School Summitt’s students, families, and staff raised the “environmental bar” for schools! They continue to recycle cans, collect phone books, and take home plastic bottles. But recently they created the Summitt Environmental Committee which sends "Go Green" emails to teachers and staff. The committee also collaborates with scouts to involve kids in the KAB Design-a-Bag contest, their Adopt-a-Garden-Plot project, and the Spring Garden Workday. They recently made strides in reducing waste at events: students were asked to bring reusable drink bottles to school for Field Day which kept 600 plastic water bottles out of the waste stream! It doesn't end there...students brought hundreds of plastic grocery bags to reuse at the school Spring Garage Sale. Afterwards, the remaining 800 bags were recycled at Cycled Plastics! Summitt parents and teachers also poured creative and educational energies into Earth Month including leading activities from KAB's Patch Pals Activity Kits and creating an interactive display, "Earth Day Promise House" where students posted environmental practices for them and their families to follow at home.

Deep Wood Elementary School Deep Wood Elementary Schools has had ongoing paper recycling at their school but this year they stepped it up. For six months they have had a contest to collect the most paper. They have reached their goals and beyond with the help of an outstanding student and his family. A fourth grader has been picking up Auto Mart Magazines every week from the owner's warehouse (with permission) and hauling the unused magazines to the Deep Wood recycling bin. The student and his family have single handedly collected over 15,000 pounds of paper alone! The school and student passion about recycling is inspiring and proof that we can make a difference.
Laurel Moutain Elementary School Students at Laurel Mountain Elementary School stepped up recycling this year. Their plastic recycling campaign began by researching the benefits of recycling and using that information to make posters to place around the school. Students appeared on the school news program to educate other students about plastic recycling. Then to begin the collection process, students made collection bins and placed the bins centrally near each grade level. Volunteers take the collected plastic home to recycle. St. Gabriel Catholic School Fifth grade students at St. Gabriel's Catholic School made puppets from recyclable materials and wrote skits which they performed for primary students to promote the Legacy of Giving paper recycling project. Each student of the school was asked to bring in a bag of paper from home that could be recycled in an effort to get the community of school families involved in the ongoing paper recycling effort at school. |
