PODER Hosts Trash Pick-up at Oak Springs Water Quality Preserve01/12/2008What was once an abandoned six acres to be cleared and paved for retail and fast food is now a lush, peaceful, tree-filled preserve where springs trickle, native species thrive, and a trail bypasses the busy intersection of Airport Blvd. (PODER praises American Youth Works' hard work in cleaning up and building the trail).  Now we invite community members to see the progress and help pick up trash along the springs.Where: Oak Springs Preserve, 3106 Oak Springs Dr, just off Airport Blvd             (across from the library)When: Saturday, January 12th, 9am-12pm (come early if you can)What to bring:  Long pants, comfy shoes, friends! Windsor Park Community Garden Workday01/13/2008Help support community gardening in Austin, learn local gardening techniques and meet some really neat folks by participating in garden workdays! Windsor Park Gardeners need help this Sunday spreading compost on beds to get ready for spring planting, pulling weeds and grass from around the trees, and pruning the blackberries. El Jardin Alegre Community Garden Workday  01/19/2008 Every third Saturday of the month El Jardin Alegre gardeners and volunteers get together to improve and beautify the garden. One project currently in the work is their new tool shed built partly out of recycled materials. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd Cleanup, hosted by State Representative Dawnna Dukes 01/19/2008State Representative Dawnna Dukes is hosting the 8th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd Clean Up, coming up on Saturday, January 19.  Volunteers will meet at JJ Seabrook Park to get supplies and snacks and will then set off to clean MLK Blvd.  MLK Clean Up is an excellent opportunity to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of service by beautifying the street bearing his name.  This event is held in conjunction with United Way's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  Date: Saturday, January 19th, 2008Time:  11am-1pmLocation:  J.J. Brodie Wild Workday01/20/08 Come help keep Brodie looking wild, natural, and clean too!  Volunteers will be doing some clean up trash and brush clearing to restore the native savanna and help the native grasses and flowers. The grass is tall and lush and there aren't many trails, so wear long pants and sturdy shoes. There is a seasonal creek area, so rubber boots are not a bad idea.Bring your own work gloves and tools like loppers and pruners. Trash bags, drinks, and snacks will be provided. Smith Creek Clean Up01/21/08The 4-H Capital Americorps Project has decided to do a creek clean-up in the seasonal creek that runs parallel to Smith Rd.  This creek feeds into Boggy Creek and is some serious need of attention.  This project is aimed at reducing potential mosquito populations, facilitating water flow into Boggy Creek, and cleaning any trash or pollution that may be found in the area.  Several other Smith Creek neighbor businesses have joined forces with the 4-H Capital Americorps Project.  All volunteers are encouraged to come out and take part in this MLK day of service!
