Bright Leaf Preserve Workday  01/10/2009   Join EcoTexas volunteers for a workday at Bright Leaf Preserve to remove invasive plants like bamboo and nandina.  These invasives threaten to choke out native species which are essential to the well-being of the entire ecosystem through their rapid and widespread proliferation. FIRST LEGO League Championship 01/10/2009   FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program that introduces children to the fun experience of solving real-world problems by applying math, science, and technology. Guided by adult mentors and their own imaginations, FLL participants solve real-world engineering challenges, develop important life skills, and learn to make positive contributions to society. MLK Day Tree Planting and Cleanup01/17/2009 American Youthworks Environmental Corps is partnering with PODER and Treefolks to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 17th. This service day will take place at 3 different sites around Austin. Service performed at Oak Springs preserve will focus on park clean up and some native plant and tree planting. Service performed at Ponciana and Franklin Park will focus on the planting of 226 trees. Breakfast and t-shirts will be provided to volunteers. Service will begin at 8:30am with breakfast and sign in and will end 11:30 with cleanup and a speaker. MLK Day of Service 200901/17/2009 Join hundreds of volunteers and spend a few hours volunteering and remembering just how true the words “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve” are. Tree Planting  01/24/2009   Volunteers will be planting native hardwoods to promote the re-establishment of native vegetation and improve habitat value to an area impacted by previous land use practices.Please bring shovels, gloves, and drinking water.  Sturdy footgear, sun block and hats are recommended. 360 Bridge Cleanup01/31/2009     Join Central Texas Mountaineers (CTM) and Keep Austin Beautiful to help clean up the Loop 360 Bridge. Volunteers will be rappelling down the side of the cliff next to the bridge to clean up bottles, cans, and other trash to help keep one of Austin's favorite views beautiful. So, if you are a climber and have experience rappelling, we need your skills!  Non-climbers are also needed to help consolidate the full bags of trash.Climbers please bring:

  • Climbing harness and belay device,
  • plus a spare carabiner to clip a trash bag.
  • Long sleeve shirt, long pants, and work gloves.

If that’s a big no, come be a part of a momentous zero-waste project at two fun-filled Austin Farmers’ Market (AFM) locations. Help assist customers with recycling, compost, and landfill material and help the market achieve its zero-waste goal!
