Tree of the Year 2009 Nominations06/30/2009 It’s time to send in your pick for “Tree of the Year 2009.” Nominations are due June 30th.  Each year, one large and one small tree within the Austin city limits will be recognized. Look for trees that are native, healthy and beautiful. A nomination form may be found at www.cityofaustin.org/treeoftheyear. A form may also be picked up at local plant nurseries or the Zilker Garden Center.The winners will be chosen by a committee that includes representatives from Austin Energy, Parks and Recreation, Watershed Protection and Development Review, the University of Texas and the community.Date:  Nominations are due June 30th, 2009Contact:  www.cityofaustin.org/treeoftheyear or call (512) 482-5342

Eco Texas Bright Leaf Preserve Cleanup5/16/2009Come to the Eco Texas volunteer days at Bright Leaf Preserve to help eliminate harmful invasive species such as bamboo and nandina. These invasives threaten to choke out native species which are essential to the well-being of the entire ecosystem through their rapid and widespread proliferation. Water and tools will be provided, bring only a good attitude.  North Loop Neighborhood Green05/16/2009   Bruning Green is a neighbor-maintained green space that was established in 2001 and has been developed into a beautiful little public space with a butterfly bed, path, stone seating walls, and bench. It is very precious to the neighborhood and needs regular maintenance to keep it in top condition.  Volunteers are needed to help mulch the trees to prevent ground compaction and help retain water.    Date: Saturday, May 16th    Time:  9am-10am Location:  Bruning Green @ 52nd, Evans, and Bruning Avenue (N. Canoeing/Kayaking Cleanup05/16/2009 Join the Sierra Club and Austin Paddle Club in an effort to keep Lady Bird Lake free of debris!  Don’t own a boat?  No problem!  TG Canoes and Kayaks will provide one at no cost to cleanup participants.  TG Canoes and Kayaks needs to know how many boats to provide so please register by May 8th, 2009.  Led by Philip Russell & Phyllis Gruver.  Volunteers may go out to eat after the cleanup at a local restaurant. Date: Saturday, May 16th     Time:  9am-12:30pmLocation:  north shore of Lady Bird Lake at the Holiday Inn boat launch near I-35 (Central Austin – 78701)Register:  CLICK HERE (All donated canoe spots have been filled for this date.  Volunteers with their own boats are still welcome to register for this date.  You can also register online for the June 20th cleanup which still has donated boat space available.) Registration Deadline: May 8th, 2009

 Quilombo Community Garden Workday05/16/2009   Quilombo, a community garden on the east side, is looking for help in making this season a bountiful one! Quilombo is entirely volunteer run, and works with a minimum of funds.  Please join volunteers on Saturdays, to come together four hours before sunset and put energy into the garden in exchange for vegetables.
