Tree of the Year 2009 Nominations06/30/2009 It’s time to send in your pick for “Tree of the Year 2009.” Nominations are due June 30th.  Each year, one large and one small tree within the Austin city limits will be recognized. Look for trees that are native, healthy and beautiful. A nomination form may be found at www.cityofaustin.org/treeoftheyear. A form may also be picked up at local plant nurseries or the Zilker Garden Center.The winners will be chosen by a committee that includes representatives from Austin Energy, Parks and Recreation, Watershed Protection and Development Review, the University of Texas and the community.Date:  Nominations are due June 30th, 2009Contact:  www.cityofaustin.org/treeoftheyear or call (512) 482-5342

Homewood Heights Community Garden06/06/2009 An urban community garden in East Austin sustained by neighborhood volunteers invites you to join in the gardening fun.  The garden is in full bloom and could use a hand!  Projects for this workday include digging holes and planting, pulling weeds, & building a trellis for black eyed peas, bitter melon, and Italian pole beans. Date: Saturday, June 6thTime:  9am until it heats up (all volunteers will be invited back for a bbq/potluck at the garden that evening)Location: 2606 Sol Wilson (Central East Austin – 78702)Contact:  Amber at ambermburks@yahoo.com

 Quilombo Community Garden Workday06/06/2009  Quilombo, a community garden on the east side, is looking for help in making this season a bountiful one! Quilombo is entirely volunteer run, and works with a minimum of funds.  Please join volunteers on Saturdays, to come together four hours before sunset and put energy into the garden in exchange for vegetables.
