Zilker Preserve Restoration9/05/09 EcoTexas is hosting upcoming workdays at the Zilker Preserve removing various invasive species, including Nandina, Japanese Privet, and Chinaberry among other species. Once the species are removed, the City of Austin will help with planting native species to restore Zilker to its natural state! North Loop Neighborhood Green08/08/2009 Bruning Green is a neighbor-maintained green space that was established in 2001 and has been developed into a beautiful little public space with a butterfly bed, path, stone seating walls, and bench. It is very precious to the neighborhood and needs regular maintenance to keep it in top condition. Volunteers are needed to help mulch the trees to prevent ground compaction and help retain water. Day of Caring (Project Registration Open NOW)9/11/09 Keep Austin Beautiful is partnering with Hands On Central Texas & United Way Capital Area for the Day of Caring on September 11th. This year’s projects highlight the importance of community service and philanthropy to affect critical community issues like education, health, financial stability, and the environment. Day of Caring organizers are currently recruiting projects to send eager volunteers to, so if you need some extra helping hands then register your project by August 21st. Build a Children’s Healing Garden 9/11/09 One of Keep Austin Beautiful’s 2009 KAB Grant Winners is going to hold their first workday on September 11th as part of the United Way Day of Caring! Visit www.KeepAustinBeautiful.org/NBG to learn more about our grant program. The Austin Child Guidance Center has been providing mental health services to Austin youth for over 50 years and to better serve our clients and reconnect children and adolescents with nature, they are building a Children’s Healing Garden. This project will transform the outdoor space into an attractive, welcoming, and functional garden for clients and families to enjoy. The garden will provide a space for relaxation and therapeutic healing for children and families that are often experiencing grief, trauma, abuse, neglect, school phobias, and parent-child relationship issues. Come out and help them break ground in the Children’s Healing Garden on September 11! The Fall Day of Caring will serve as a workday where volunteers can participate in the "groundbreaking" activities, such as prepping the soil, tilling, digging, plotting garden perimeters, and clearing debris. KAB has tools to share (www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/toolshack) and volunteers to lend a helping hand to these projects, but one of the main things lacking are native plants. Now there’s the chance to get some FREE seeds to share all over Austin. A site on the NE side of Pleasant Valley and Lyons is going to be developed and the owners have generously allowed access to the property to collect wildflower seeds. Led by a Capital Area Master Naturalist, volunteers will be able to collect millions of Mexican hat and clasping coneflower seeds in just a couple of hours. Come join other volunteers this Saturday for a fun morning of seed collecting!
