Plaza Saltillo Beautification10/24/09 Would you like to help beautify one of Austin’s MetroRail Stations?  Do you like planting trees?  Come help plant some at Plaza Saltillo! Interesting things have been happening lately over at Capital Metro’s Plaza Saltillo Station.  Through a Keep Austin Beautiful Grant and at the request of Capital Metro, local Landscape Designer Ilse Frank has been working on a new landscape design.  On September 11, volunteers from around the city gathered to start work on re-landscaping the Plaza.  This included, weeding, remove existing plantings, amending the soil (adding and mixing in Dillo Dirt), pruning of wisteria, and other plaza beautification prep-work. Right now, as it stands, there are empty flower beds awaiting beautiful plantings.   On October 24, you’ll have a chance to volunteer your time to help fill those beds with beautiful new trees and plants!  The day’s project is part of a larger effort to revive Plaza Saltillo. Come volunteer to learn more about the project’s future goals. Date: Saturday, October 24Time:  9 AM – 12 PMLocation:  412 Comal Street, Austin, TX 78702Parking:  Consider taking the bus, carpooling, biking, or walking!  Limited parking on North and South side of site.  Contact:  Alissa Schram Alissa.schram@capmetro.org, 369-7759Note:  Bring water, sunscreen, weather-ready gear (hats/rain wear/etc).

Friends of Convict Hill Quarry Park10/31/09 Join Friends of Convict Hill Quarry Park for their next work day!  This project will involve spreading a large pile of mulch and planting some wildflower seeds.  Friends of Convict  Hill Quarry Park are also looking for a volunteer to prepare materials to display in the tower kiosk.  (This project has a flexible time line and can be done from any location)  There is a large color map of the trails that should be mounted on a firm backing for display in one panel and the map and backing will be provided.  The group just needs someone to attach the map to the support material, probably with a rubber adhesive.  The group also needs to prepare a history panel describing the original quarry development.  This may require some research to get old documents.  Another panel will be for park development, describing the volunteer work over the past 3 years.  Plenty of pictures and news articles and written material to support this display have already been gathered and are ready to go.  Date:  Saturday, October 31stTime:  9am - 1pmLocation:  6511 Convict Hill Rd (South West Austin - 78749)Contact:  drjet@austin.rr.com

KAB Vol Op: Create a Giving TreeFlexible Calling all creative talent, or just anyone who likes having fun cutting up paper and playing with string.  Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB) has a lot of folks come through our office and we’ve also got a lot of need for things like office supplies and gardening tools, so to bring the two together we would like to have a Giving Tree to display in our office that would be decorated with tags depicting things that we could really use.  People can give to the giving tree, we’ll continue to give back to the community, and the tree grows stronger and stronger. If you’d like to adopt this project please contact Jessica@KeepAustinBeautiful.org
