A Special West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt Clean-up & Invasive Species Removal12/05/09 This very special clean up of the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt is in accordance with the University of Texas, Lady Bird Wildflower Center Environmental Assessment Report wherein it was established that non-native species of trees and shrubs are negatively affecting the health of the greenbelt. In order to protect and conserve valuable native trees and shrubs such as elms, oaks, pecans and other valuable under story plants, the first step to remove invasive foliage removal is planned. Invasive plants crowd out the slower growing natives and rob them of valuable nutrients and water. In addition, stream bank stabilization and flood control will be aided with the removal of trash & debris along and in the creek channel. All volunteer work is being closely supervised by the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department Forestry Division. Date: Saturday, December 5thTime: 8:30am-1pmLocation: Western side of South Sixth St. between 1210 and 1100 South Sixth St. along the parks greenbelt easement.Contact: Ingrid Weigand, BCNA Park Committee Chair, e-mail: urpprods@earthlink.net Special Note: In order to facilitate the smooth and safe removal of trash and unwanted foliage, please do not park on the west side of South Sixth Street along the greenbelt during the work session time.

Clean Lady Bird LakeDecember 5, 2009 Love Lady Bird Lake but hate the styrofoam washed up along its shoreline? Join hundreds of volunteers in an increased effort to put the finishing touches on this beautiful asset to our community. Volunteers will have a rewarding morning as they search high and low for every last bit of trash and get to know other lake enthusiasts. There are five starting locations for shoreline volunteers, and on-the-water volunteer will have boats provided by Texas Rowing Center, Zilker Boat Rentals, and Rowing Dock. Volunteers who’d like to bring their own boats may join the Sierra Club cleanup starting at the NW corner of the lake/I-35 or join KAB volunteers launching from the International Youth Hostel, 2200 South Lakeshore Blvd. (See registration link below for more details). On-the-Water volunteers for most of the sites should be 16 years or older (on-the-water volunteers with LCRA should be 18 or accompanied by an adult guardian). After a semester of learning about water testing, pollution solutions, and trash students from KAB’s Green Teens program are ready to wow you with their knowledge. Plant Rescue12/10/09The City of Austin has scheduled a series of three plant rescue dates for a property that will be developed soon. Native plants will be used around town to restore public spaces, and “rescuers” are also welcome to bring their own pots to take some plants home to plant in their own gardens. The dates are December 10, 12 and 16 with a rain date of December 18th in case one of the days is rained out. The rescue times are approximately from 10 AM to 2 PM. The whole property is fairly large (maybe sixty + acres, although a large section is in a conservation easement which can't be disturbed). Rescuers will not be allowed in certain areas since the city is preserving several "buffer" zones of trees, etc. There are large, relatively flat areas as well as slopes and drainage areas. The property contains heavy ashe juniper/oak areas as well as a mixture of cedar elms, Spanish red oaks, live oaks (even some fairly large ones), escarpment black cherries (a few), evergreen sumacs, yaupon holly, flame leaf sumacs, Mexican Buckeye, redbud trees and Texas persimmons; there are various sized seedlings of most of these, appropriate for hand digging. In addition there are grassy areas. A sample of other plants might include agarita, twisted leaf yucca, rusty blackhaw vibernum, cedar sedge (and maybe other sedges), American beauty berry (a few), two-leaf senna, Lindheimer senna, Lindheimer crown beard, a few lantana (horrida), little bluestem, silver bluestem, Indian grass, tall gramma and even a few mountain laurels and lots more including prickly pear cactus. Date: Saturday, Dec 10Time: 10am-2pmLocation: After passing the "four points" intersection of 620 and 2222, go west on 620 a very short distance. The site is on the right after you pass the commercial buildings. There is a rock driveway, chain link fence and gate. Drive into the site and park in the cleared area near the registration table. You MUST see the city representatives, sign in, and sign a release form BEFORE proceeding onto the rescue site. Contact: dale-bulla@pobox.com

Eradication Day at the LBJ Wildflower Center12/16/09The LBJ Wildflower Center has recently discovered Ligustrum lucidum along the natural areas (outside the gardens). Volunteers are welcome to join the eradication party! Luckily it was found in time, and can probably be wiped out in one or two tries. This is definitely an instant gratification project. If you can make it, please RSVP, so staff can permit entry through the gate. Another incentive; volunteers are welcome to wander the gardens and grounds for free once the work is over!Date: Wednesday Dec. 16thTime: 8:30am-12pmLocation: LBJ Wildflower Center 4801 La Crosse Avenue (78739)Contact: RSVP with Travis Gallo at tgallo@wildflower.orgwww.wildflower.org
Plant Rescue12/16/09The City of Austin has scheduled a series of three plant rescue dates for a property that will be developed soon. Date: Saturday, Dec 16Time: 10am-2pmLocation: After passing the "four points" intersection of 620 and 2222, go west on 620 a very short distance.
