Call for Projects – MLK Day of Service1/16/09**Project Registration deadline is December 31, 2009.**Like Dr. King, Hands On Central Texas believes everyone can achieve greatness through service to others. The MLK Day of Service volunteer projects and activities will help volunteers understand how to use Dr. King’s blueprint for civic and social activism to affect social change in our community. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can't read, mentoring youngsters, and many other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.  Register your volunteer project today! Ecological Literacy Workday

Ecological Literacy Workday Last Saturday of Each Month       Combining volunteer work with learning about local ecology, the Ecological Literacy Day at Hornsby Bend begins with several hours of outdoor work - ranging from trail maintenance to habitat restoration to work in the native plant nursery - and ends with at least an hour of learning about local ecology - birds, bugs, and more! First Night Austin - Environmental Ambassadors Wanted12/31/09Volunteers, 18 years of age or older, are needed this year to help shine a GREEN light on downtown Austin’s transformation into an artistic (and environmentally-friendly) playground.  The stage will be the city's plazas, parks, streets, storefronts, and building facades.  Building, bridges and streets will become giant canvases and we want GREEN to be the brightest color in the palette!You can help make all this happen by taking part for only a few hours as a First Night Austin - Environmental Ambassador! DATE: Thursday, December 31, 2009TIME: Shifts from 12PM – 12 midnight; Average shifts are only 3 hours long, 12:00 - 3:00PM, 2:30 – 5:30PM, 5:00 – 8:00PM, and 8:00 - Midnight. There will be grand procession at 6PM, and a midnight fireworks show on Lady Bird Lake!LOCATION: Downtown Austin/Congress Avenue (78701)PARKING: When it Comes to Transportation, GO Green - Carpool or take advantage of the Capital Metro Bus lines that will take to you right to the event. Information on these routes can be found at www.capmetro.com. If you have a bicycle, ride and park at any of the 3 bike racks located around the footprint.  City Garages: The Convention Center Garage (201 East 2nd Street, entrances on Brazos and San Jacinto), and One Texas Center Garage (open after 5 PM) (505 Barton Springs Road) will be open and will cost $7 per vehicle. Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail Project1/2/10Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park.  This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas.  Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower.  Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries.  A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established.  Date:  Saturday, January 2, 2010Time:  9am-12pmLocation: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Put the Finishing Seal on MuralsFlexible, Jan 7-15Volunteer artists from the Robertson Hill Neighborhood Association have been hard at work creating murals that reflect their neighborhood.  This project is part of a 2009 KAB Grant www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/nbg2009robertsonhillna and once complete the murals will decorate eight vacant houses awaiting restoration.  Once the homes are restored the murals will find a new home, still within the neighborhood, at Kenny Dorham's Backyard. The murals are all complete but just need to be sealed to protect them from the weather.  Two or three mural backs or fronts can be done at a time (in garages and must stay upright) which takes under 2 hours; they need at least 6 hrs to dry before doing the other side. KAB Volunteer Leader Training

Become a KAB Project Leader & Ambassador! KAB staff is impressed and inspired by volunteers on a daily basis, which is why we are upping the ante on volunteering and confident you will respond. Take volunteering to the next level – become a KAB Ambassador. On Thursday, January 27th KAB will be leading a free 3-hour Volunteer Project Leader Training. Build the confidence, knowledge and skills necessary to lead an effective cleanup, school garden workday, or to lead education activities. The 3-hour workshop will include a 2-hour session on effective project management and a 1-hour breakout session specializing on KAB focus area of your choice: clean, beautify, and educate.   • Clean– Is litter a pet peeve that you want to eradicate, or have you already led cleanups but want to take them to the next level? Learn how to get supplies and logistical support, enrich your cleanup with engaging activities, and visit a nearby waterway to identify site logistics, address safety concerns, and spot trash pockets. 
  • Beautify – School gardens are a valuable teaching tool for youth but need lots of maintenance. In this session learn how to conduct a site assessment to identify garden needs, organize volunteers in groups, get the supplies you need, and walk through basics of garden maintenance. For completing the project commitment after the training, trainees in this area may connect with a KAB school garden project or work with a school of their choice.
  • Educate – Delve into hands-on activities on compost, bugs, recycling, and litter to prepare yourself to represent KAB while leading tabling activities at school, corporate, community and city-wide festivals and fairs.

All participants are required to attend the full 3-hour training and lead 2 projects within 6 months of the course. The project may be in your trained area or in any of the KAB focus areas. As a KAB Ambassador you are assisting as we grow our outreach, raise environmental awareness and support community projects. KAB relies on leaders like you to achieve its mission. Trained Volunteer Project Leaders are eligible for mini-grants from Hands on Central Texas. Put the Finishing Seal on MuralsFlexible, Jan 7-15Volunteer artists from the Robertson Hill Neighborhood Association have been hard at work creating murals that reflect their neighborhood.  This project is part of a 2009 KAB Grant www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/nbg2009robertsonhillna and once complete the murals will decorate eight vacant houses awaiting restoration.  Once the homes are restored the murals will find a new home, still within the neighborhood, at Kenny Dorham's Backyard. The murals are all complete but just need to be sealed to protect them from the weather.  Two or three mural backs or fronts can be done at a time (in garages and must stay upright) which takes under 2 hours; they need at least 6 hrs to dry before doing the other side. If that’s a big no, come be a part of a momentous zero-waste project at two fun-filled Austin Farmers’ Market (AFM) locations. Help assist customers with recycling, compost, and landfill material and help the market achieve its zero-waste goal!
