Join us to find out how naturally occurring plants improve soil health, protect groundwater and diversify habitats. Models will demonstrate surface runoff versus infiltration and hands-on activities will emphasize building a native garden bed and the roles of natives.  The Dirt on SoilYou may be surprised to know that soil is not a necessity of plants but it does help plants meet basic needs by giving them a place to anchor their roots and take in water and minerals. Join us to discover explore the science of soil, make soil observations, and learn how to build your garden from the ground up with the right soil structure and composition.

MLK Day of Service01/16/10Like Dr. King, Hands On Central Texas believes everyone can achieve greatness through service to others. The MLK Day of Service volunteer projects and activities will help volunteers understand how to use Dr. King’s blueprint for civic and social activism to affect social change in our community. Help assist customers with recycling, compost, and landfill material and help the market achieve its zero-waste goal! Ecological Literacy Workday1/30/10           Combining volunteer work with learning about local ecology, the Ecological Literacy Day at Hornsby Bend begins with several hours of outdoor work - ranging from trail maintenance to habitat restoration to work in the native plant nursery - and ends with at least an hour of learning about local ecology - birds, bugs, and more! Pennyback Bridge Rappeling Cleanup1/30/2010 On January the 30th, 2010, The Central Texas Mountaineers,  Keep Austin Beautiful, and the crack team of nature-scalin', trash-pluckin', super heroic volunteers known as "US" will again fight evil litterbug activity and make things better by cleaning up The [360] Pennybacker Bridge from 9:00 a.m. to noon.  Volunteers make a HUGE difference to keep trash and toxins OUT of Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake (and beyond!) by cleaning up the ridge and base of the northwest west side of the [360] Pennybacker Bridge. A few of the volunteers are going for barbecue at The County Line afterwards. What to wear? Winter coats, hats, thermals as needed, but definitely wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses / protective eye wear or sunglasses, work gloves, sturdy hiking boots, or shoes with good outdoor tread.  Bring a change of clothes if desired because people get DIRTY doing this. BRING water.  It's challenging to say the least, so let's keep hydrated.  Everyone needs to sign the release of liability.  Parents with kids must supervise their kids closely.  This includes pets!  One of the organizer's good friend and Rottweiler/Mastiff, Bruno, will be on hand again to MC and boost morale with his fabulous presence. Non-experienced climbers will leave the rappelling and climbing to the experienced climbers with Central Texas Mountaineers headed by Gary Ellis. There is one spot at the base of the ridge that seems to be THE collection pocket of trash/garbage and several volunteers will be needed there and more volunteers will need to human chain many bags from that point. Date: Saturday January 30th, 2010Time:  9am to 12 noon.  (Come earlier if you want to get a head start and Stephen Finos, one of the leaders, will be there between 8 & 8:30am)Location: NW corner of the Pennyback Bridge over Lake Austin & Loop 360 (West Austin)Contact: Stephen Finos at stevfino@yahoo.com

Uplift Austin CommUnity Volunteer Days 1/30/2010 and 2/20/2010Uplift Austin has two CommUnity Volunteer Days coming up at KIPP Austin Collegiate - please come help the students implement the landscaping project they designed to improve their campus! Type of labor: Gardening/landscaping Suitable for: Anyone! No special degrees or skills required.  Seeking folks who enjoy digging, planting, and other forms of gardening-related physical labor.
