Put the Finishing Seal on MuralsFlexible, Jan 7-15Volunteer artists from the Robertson Hill Neighborhood Association have been hard at work creating murals that reflect their neighborhood.  This project is part of a 2009 KAB Grant www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/nbg2009robertsonhillna and once complete the murals will decorate eight vacant houses awaiting restoration.  Once the homes are restored the murals will find a new home, still within the neighborhood, at Kenny Dorham's Backyard. The murals are all complete but just need to be sealed to protect them from the weather.  Two or three mural backs or fronts can be done at a time (in garages and must stay upright) which takes under 2 hours; they need at least 6 hrs to dry before doing the other side. Two back are sealed already and just needs some touchup, so that means 8 fronts and 6 backs still need to be sealed.  Date/Time: Flexible, January 7th – 15th Contact: Valerie at RobertsonHill@gmail.com or 457-0273

Become a KAB Project Leader & Ambassador! KAB staff is impressed and inspired by volunteers on a daily basis, which is why we are upping the ante on volunteering and confident you will respond. Take volunteering to the next level – become a KAB Ambassador. On Thursday, January 27th KAB will be leading a free 3-hour Volunteer Project Leader Training. Build the confidence, knowledge and skills necessary to lead an effective cleanup, school garden workday, or to lead education activities. The 3-hour workshop will include a 2-hour session on effective project management and a 1-hour breakout session specializing on KAB focus area of your choice: clean, beautify, and educate. All participants are required to lead 2 projects within 6 months of the course.   Leadership Training Date and Time: Thursday, January 27th, 6:15-9pm Location: KAB office – 55 North I-35, Suite 235, 78702Contact: Monica Lopez Magee at 512.391.0619 or at monica@keepaustinbeautiful.orgNotes: snacks provided   2-hour Volunteer Project Leader Training - Learn how you can become a leader & advocate in the community, address critical social issues & develop the skills, knowledge and abilities to organize projects and lead educational activities in the Austin community. Space is limited to 40 participants.   1-hour breakout sessions provide specialization in the following areas. Space is limited in each session to 15 participants.

  • Clean– Is litter a pet peeve that you want to eradicate, or have you already led cleanups but want to take them to the next level? Learn how to get supplies and logistical support, enrich your cleanup with engaging activities, and visit a nearby waterway to identify site logistics, address safety concerns, and spot trash pockets.
  • Beautify – School gardens are a valuable teaching tool for youth but need lots of maintenance. In this session learn how to conduct a site assessment to identify garden needs, organize volunteers in groups, get the supplies you need, and walk through basics of garden maintenance. For completing the project commitment after the training, trainees in this area may connect with a KAB school garden project or work with a school of their choice.
  • Educate – Delve into hands-on activities on compost, bugs, recycling, and litter to prepare yourself to represent KAB while leading tabling activities at school, corporate, community and city-wide festivals and fairs.

All participants are required to attend the full 3-hour training and lead 2 projects within 6 months of the course. The project may be in your trained area or in any of the KAB focus areas. As a KAB Ambassador you are assisting as we grow our outreach, raise environmental awareness and support community projects. KAB relies on leaders like you to achieve its mission. Trained Volunteer Project Leaders are eligible for mini-grants from Hands on Central Texas. Grants are up to $250 and aimed at covering the cost of supplies to carry out an effective second project.   @font-face {

Pennyback Bridge Rappeling Cleanup1/30/2010 On January the 30th, 2010, The Central Texas Mountaineers,  Keep Austin Beautiful, and the crack team of nature-scalin', trash-pluckin', super heroic volunteers known as "US" will again fight evil litterbug activity and make things better by cleaning up The [360] Pennybacker Bridge from 9:00 a.m. to noon.  Volunteers make a HUGE difference to keep trash and toxins OUT of Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake (and beyond!) by cleaning up the ridge and base of the northwest west side of the [360] Pennybacker Bridge. A few of the volunteers are going for barbecue at The County Line afterwards. What to wear? Winter coats, hats, thermals as needed, but definitely wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses / protective eye wear or sunglasses, work gloves, sturdy hiking boots, or shoes with good outdoor tread.  Bring a change of clothes if desired because people get DIRTY doing this. BRING water.  It's challenging to say the least, so let's keep hydrated.  Everyone needs to sign the release of liability.  Parents with kids must supervise their kids closely.  This includes pets!  One of the organizer's good friend and Rottweiler/Mastiff, Bruno, will be on hand again to MC and boost morale with his fabulous presence. Non-experienced climbers will leave the rappelling and climbing to the experienced climbers with Central Texas Mountaineers headed by Gary Ellis. There is one spot at the base of the ridge that seems to be THE collection pocket of trash/garbage and several volunteers will be needed there and more volunteers will need to human chain many bags from that point. Date: Saturday January 30th, 2010Time:  9am to 12 noon.  (Come earlier if you want to get a head start and Stephen Finos, one of the leaders, will be there between 8 & 8:30am)Location: NW corner of the Pennyback Bridge over Lake Austin & Loop 360 (West Austin)Contact: Stephen Finos at stevfino@yahoo.com

It’s My Park Day 3/6/2010 Last year, 2,500 volunteers attended more than 60 projects at parks all over town. Projects, led by neighborhood groups, individuals, and organizations, ranged from simple pruning and painting to highly technical drainage control improvements. Some groups attracted additional volunteers by including live music, an educational component, a picnic, or other activities. It’s My Park Day has three major purposes:

  • To get much needed park work done
  • To expand the volunteer base for future projects at your park and others
  • To grow park leaders by providing an accessible way to get started

Lead a Project:All It’s My Park Day projects are led by volunteers.  Guidance, volunteer recruitment, tools, and tee shirts will be provided. You provide the enthusiasm and ideas. Date and Time: All day on Sat, March 6th Location: Parks throughout AustinContact:  You’ll find all the volunteer information at: http://connect.austinparks.org/site/GetTogether?gettogether=activity_splash&cal_activity_id=1020

Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail Project2/6/10Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park.  This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas.  Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower.  Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries.  A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established.  Date:  Saturday, Febuary 6, 2010Time:  9am-12pmLocation: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Enter the trail from 1st street, just south of Slaughter Lane, on the right side of the street, where the trees begin.  You can Google the location using 10000 South 1st Street, Austin, TX 78748.  It should show a spot on the Northeast side of Mary Moore Searight Park.Contact: Please RSVP to Claire Sorenson, csorenson1@austin.rr.com or on the Facebook site listed below http://sites.google.com/site/slaughtercreektrails/HomeBecome a member, sign up for events, even RSVP at our Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=176873979247
