Bull Creek Greenbelt Work Day 2/13/2010A stand of an exotic giant cane, Arundo donax, was heavily damaged by high water last year. Unfortunately, it survived! Indeed, there are two stands that are fairly large and two small ones. Naturalists, experienced with cane and it's removal, advised treatment, the first step of which is to cut it down and remove above-ground material. The downed material will be cut and broken into smaller pieces then spread along a portion of the trail (shown in the map) to improve travel conditions. As a special treat, expect to have one or more of the naturalists join in. Removal of Invasives at Pease District Park 2/13/10 The focus will be in battling the Waxleaf Ligustrum (Japanese Privet) and Chinaberry which is choking out the native flora of the park, especially in that area along the creek just upstream from the courts.  There is plenty of Ligustrum to go around, so rest assured that everyone will have ample exercise in the battle! Volunteers will pile the fallen trees up nearby where they can be easily collected by the park staff and will be using weed wrenches and saws.Date: Saturday, Feb. 13th Time: 10am-2pmLocation:  meet at the sand volleyball courts at 10am. Mulch and More at Pease District Park2/13/10 Volunteers will be spreading mulch, removing storm damage and invasive species, cleaning flower beds and picking-up trash. So there will be something for all skill levels and strength. It should be fun and give a head start on a general Spring cleaning. Come on out Saturday morning with some work gloves and any extra tools that you have.  Wheel barrows are always particularly needed.  T-shirts and refreshments will be provided to our great volunteers. KAB Ed: Natural Leaders Training

Natural Leaders, presented by United Way Capital Area/Hands On Central Texas & Keep Austin Beautiful, is training program that equips volunteers with the skills, knowledge and ability to organize volunteer projects while addressing environmental issues that affect their communities.The Natural Leaders training consists of a 3-hour session focused on providing volunteers with the basics of how to lead projects; how to manage and recruit volunteers; ways to identify needs in the community; adopt existing or create new volunteer projects; and ways to locate and utilize resources. Participants also learn how to be stewards of our shared environment through education on issues such as sustainability, climate change, technology and innovation, energy efficiency and conservation, local food production and park and trail restoration and beautification of green spaces. After the training, participants (Natural Leaders) are encouraged to lead one to three projects within one year.This year, we're encouraging our Natural Leaders to work on their first project during United Way's Day of Caring on April 23, 2010 and Keep Austin Beautiful's Clean Sweep on April 10, 2010.REGISTER: www.HandsOnCentralTexas.org

Bouldin Creek Greenbelt Cleanup and Invasive Species Removal2/20/2010 Come and join other volunteers in a cleanup and invasive species removal at  Bouldin Creek Greenbelt!  Volunteers will meet the third Saturday of every month through May of 2010.  Keep Austin Beautiful will loan volunteers some tools, but if you have handsaws, shovels or rakes, please bring those. Mt. Bonnell Clean-Up2/27/2010 Calling all climbers!  If you missed all the fun we had cleaning the cliff by the 360 bridge, you have another chance to rap off a cliff not usually open to climbers. On Feb 27 Central Texas Mountaineers and Keep Austin Beautiful will be cleaning the trash below the lookout point on Mount Bonnell. Come combine your love of hanging from a rope with a good deed. Anyone experienced at setting natural anchors can come at 8:00am to set up and be the first on a rope. Everyone else, be there at 9:00am. KAB Event: Beautification Project Unveiling

It’s My Park Day 3/6/2010 Last year, 2,500 volunteers attended more than 60 projects at parks all over town. Projects, led by neighborhood groups, individuals, and organizations, ranged from simple pruning and painting to highly technical drainage control improvements. Some groups attracted additional volunteers by including live music, an educational component, a picnic, or other activities. It’s My Park Day has three major purposes:

  • To get much needed park work done
  • To expand the volunteer base for future projects at your park and others
  • To grow park leaders by providing an accessible way to get started

Lead a Project: All It’s My Park Day projects are led by volunteers.  Guidance, volunteer recruitment, tools, and tee shirts will be provided. You provide the enthusiasm and ideas. Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail Project3/6/10Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park.  This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas.  Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower.  Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries.  A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established.  Date:  Saturday, March 6, 2010Time:  9am-12pmLocation: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Help assist customers with recycling, compost, and landfill material and help the market achieve its zero-waste goal!
