Recycling @ Eeyores4/24/10 The Friends of the Forest Foundation puts on Austin's most famous annual party:  Eeyore's Birthday Party.  Our basic premise:  to put on a safe, free, and fun event and to make enough money to put on the event next year.  If they have a good year, they give the extra money away to local charities. The Friends of the Forest Foundation has given local charities tens of thousands of dollars over the years.  They focus on small local charities with lower profiles that can be greatly affected by even a small donation.Friends of the Forest is a non-profit organization.  The only vendors allowed at Eeyores are also non-profit organizations - the largest fundraising event for many of these organizations. Since this is a uniquely Austin event, they focus on keeping our money in Austin by we sell only locally brewed beer (Independence, Live Oak, Real Ale, and St. Arnold's).Recycling/trash:  2009 was the first year that Eeyores worked towards reducing trash and increasing recycling.  This year, organizers are taking lessons learned and hope to improve recycling efforts – and they need help. For some reason, everybody wants to volunteer to pour beer, not help with trash/recycling.  Imagine that.  ;)There are two more volunteer meetings at the Dog and Duck Pub, 17th and Guadalupe at 7 pm this Wednesday (04/14/2010) and next Wednesday (04/21/2010)  Lori Moore and Gale Pena are running the recycling/trash this year.  Headquarters and check-in will be located behind the face painting booth. Date:  April 24, 2010, with a rain date of May 1, 2010Location:  Pease Park at 15th and Lamar, Austin TexasParking:  absolutely no parking at Pease.  Cycle, walk, or park in the state garages around 16th and Guadalupe and grab one of our shuttle buses there.Shifts are:    Setup:  9 am to 11 am – need one person    First Shift:  2 pm to 4 pm – need one person    Second Shift:  4 pm to 6 pm – need four people    Third Shift:  6 pm to close – need four peopleRegister:  Lori Moore and Gale Pena are running the recycling/trash this year.  Headquarters and check-in will be located behind the face painting booth. For more information call 512-448-5160 or email volunteers-subscribe@eeyores.com     Duties:

  • Set up involves getting trash cans and recycling bins prepped, installing four or five trash bags in each can/bin, and placing the bins around Pease Park.
  • Shifts involve pairs of volunteers walking around the park looking for full cans/bins.  If found, remove the full bag, tie it in a knot, set it aside near the can/bin, prep up a new trash bag.  Voila!  No hauling is required – all bags are picked up the next day when we can safely get vehicles in.  You can enjoy the party while volunteering, while not getting stuck in one place.

Benefits:

  •    All volunteers get a commemorative t-shirt.
  •    All volunteers get access to the volunteer area where free water and sodas are available
  •    Volunteers 21 and over get a wrist band

Re-Enchanting the Forest4/25/10 It's amazing what you can still find in our creeks. Even with Austin being such a green city, you can still find things like car parts, appliances, mattresses and even hazardous materials in our waterways. After the last flash flood, garbage that people have illegally dumped like car parts, appliances, and furniture have made it into our creek and are appearing in community gathering spaces.   Come help some of the Friends of Bouldin Creek keep what makes Austin Beautiful. Cleanup supplies will be provided.  Wear comfortable clothes and closed toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, bring work gloves, & bring a full reusable bottle of water. Date:  Earth Day Weekend, Sunday April 25thTime:  9am-2pmWhere: 1412 West Oltorf Road – 78704RSVP: friendsofbouldincreek@gmail.com or (512) 524-1111

Travis Audubon Society is having an invasive removal day!  It was recently observed that a portion of the Sanctuary grounds are filled with the invasive Malta Star-thistle and it needs to be removed ASAP before it spreads further. The Sanctuary is normally open to Travis Audubon members only, so this is a great opportunity for non-members to visit!  Snacks and water will be available but please bring your own bottle to refill. Please bring a sack lunch if you plan to stay throughout the day.  Date:  Saturday May 1stTime:  9amWhere: Baker Sanctuary, 12221 Lime Creek Road, Leander TX.  Meet at 9am on the registration/sign-in booth side of the SanctuaryRSVP: contact Jocelyn Taijeron no later than Noon on Thursday, April 29th to sign up for this opportunity! Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail Project5/1/10Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park.  This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas.  Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower.  Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries.  A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established.  Date:  Saturday, May 1, 2010Time:  9am-12pmLocation: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Enter the trail from 1st street, just south of Slaughter Lane, on the right side of the street, where the trees begin.  You can Google the location using 10000 South 1st Street, Austin, TX 78748.  It should show a spot on the Northeast side of Mary Moore Searight Park.Contact: Please RSVP to Claire Sorenson, csorenson1@austin.rr.com or on the Facebook site listed below http://sites.google.com/site/slaughtercreektrails/HomeBecome a member, sign up for events, even RSVP at our Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=176873979247

Invasive Species Removal @ Lower Bull Creek Greenbelt5/15/2010 The Bull Creek Foundation has been hard at work restoring their greenbelt and are ready for antoher workday.  On May 15th volunteers will focus on removing Japanese Honeysuckle, Lonicera japonica.  This invasive is really hard on the plants it climbs. It coils around stems and, as it grows, draws tightly into those stems leaving deep channels. There is a stand of this plant near the paved parking lot where volunteers will meet, and there is quite a bit of it elsewhere on the property. A second focus will be trail maintenance, mainly moving vegetation back from trails to ease transit. Trail maintenance teams may walk quite a distance to accomplish this task. Volunteers should be ready to go at 9 from the main parking lot, break about 10:30, and finish around 12 noon. Movement and work in deep vegetation is to be expected, so long pants and socks are advised. Also, with poison ivy around, covering legs, ankles and feet is prudent. Date: Sat, May 15 Time: 9am-noonLocation: Lower Bull Creek Greenbelt,  5326 Old Spicewood Springs Rd.RSVP: George Innis at gsnsj@sbcglobal.net
