Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail Project10/2/10Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park.  This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas.  Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower.  Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries.  A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established.  Date:  Saturday, October 2, 2010Time:  9am-12pmLocation: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Enter the trail from 1st street, just south of Slaughter Lane, on the right side of the street, where the trees begin.  You can Google the location using 10000 South 1st Street, Austin, TX 78748.  It should show a spot on the Northeast side of Mary Moore Searight Park.Contact: Please RSVP to Claire Sorenson, csorenson1@austin.rr.com or on the Facebook site listed below http://sites.google.com/site/slaughtercreektrails/HomeBecome a member, sign up for events, even RSVP at our Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=176873979247

Gullet Elementary Habitat Workday 10/23/2010   Gullett Elementary School is a school that is known as an exemplary academic school and one that incorporates a "living experience" in their teaching approach.  They have created many opportunities for children to learn about gardening, animals and insects and have a vegetable garden, a pond and two areas devoted to plants that attract butterflies.   One of those areas, the second grade ramp, has just been re-designed and it now includes a snake path, butterfly gardens, pergola, outdoor seating, a bunny run, turtle enclosure and a teaching area.  This space transformation was all made possible through dedicated parents, volunteers and the help of wonderful donors.   Volunteer to help keep this learning area beautiful for the children by participating in their Grounds Work Day, scheduled for October 23rd, from 9am-4pm.  At that time volunteers are needed to prune and remove weeds and invasive plants from the gardens.  For those interested, there is also an opportunity to work on their Greenhouse.     The school is located at 6310 Treadwell Blvd and volunteers should meet near the vegetable garden, (which faces Hunt Trail).  For those that can make it, bring gloves and your tools-of-choice and be there at 9:00 or whenever you can. Even a few hours of your time is very much appreciated.   Date: Saturday, October 23rd Time:  9am-4pm (any amount of time you can volunteer is appreciated) Location:  6310 Treadwell Blvd (NW Austin - 78757) RSVP:  Kris at 512-426-2899 or krramm@aol.com

Caraway Elementary Habitat Workday 10/23/2010   Caraway Elementary is having a Habitat Workday on Saturday, October 23, from 9am-12pm. In celebration of Native Plants Week, we will be planting new natives and transplanting a few others around, as well as helping kids spread seeds and water, and there are a handful of invasives we need to tackle, too. We definitely could use some volunteer help, and there will be food and raffles for those who attend.   Date: Saturday, October 23 Time: 9am-12pm (some of us will be there as early as 8am, if that time works better for you) Location: Caraway Elementary, 11104 Oak View Drive  (near 183 and Oak Knoll, just a few minutes from the Arboretum) RSVP: MMLN@austin.rr.com Notes: We’ll be on the Carlwood side of the school. From Oak Knoll, turn right onto Fireoak. Stay on Fireoak past Oak View and Danwood until you see Carlwood on your left. Take a left onto Carlwood, and it will lead you right into the parking lot. Bring gloves and a water bottle (possibly a hat and/or sunscreen, though we’ll be working primarily on the shady side of the school). We’ll have tools available, but if you have a favorite tool, do consider bringing it.

Trash & Treasure Cleanup, Let’s Scare Up Some TrashOctober 30, 2010 If you thought the September floods were scary then once you see the amount of trash that was washed into the lake it will make your skin crawl. Join hundreds of volunteers on October 30th to scare up some trash and remove debris of all varieties from Lady Bird Lake.  Bicycles, tires, fast food containers, plastic water bottles, and aluminum cans are not the only treasures participants find.  Sponsors donate gifts that organizers hide in various spots along the Trail and on-the-water volunteers can compete for a prize for the most unusual object found.  In addition to feeling great while you admire the immediate results of your hard work, you’ll also have the chance to win prizes and it’s not unusual for trail users to thank all of the outstanding volunteers. There are multiple starting locations for shoreline and on-the-water volunteers (see registration link for details). On-the-Water volunteers should be 16 years or older and 18 or older for the LCRA site.   Date: Saturday, October 30th  Time: 9am-11am Location: all around Lady Bird LakeRegistration: CLICK HEREWebsite: www.KeepAustinBeautiful.org/LadyBirdLakeContact: Jessica@KeepAustinBeautiful.org or 512.391.0622 Cleanup Sites Led by Fantastic Folks From: Austin Standup Paddleboarders, Capital Cruises, Colorado River Foundation, Expedition School, Green Feet Fitness, LCRA, Sierra ClubThe Surfrider Foundation, & The Trail Foundation In-Kind Donations to support volunteers:  Capital Cruises, Expedition School, Honest Tea, LCRA, Rowing Dock, Texas Rowing Center, Zilker Boat Rentals. This program is made possible thanks to generous donations from The Trail Foundation and the Watershed Protection Department.
