Zero Waste Ambassador First Saturday of Each Month Want a behind-the-scenes look at how the City recycles and/or properly disposes of paint, batteries, fertilizer, cleaning products and other household chemicals? The City of Austin is looking for Zero Waste Ambassadors to help at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility the first Saturday of every month. Volunteers will help unload vehicles on collection day. No training necessary! The City of Austin will provide Zero Waste Ambassadors with appropriate safety equipment. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt as thanks for participating. Mary Moore Searight Park Off-Leash Nature Trail ProjectFirst Saturday of every month Austin Parks Foundation has provided a grant for ecological restoration in the north end of Mary Moore Searight Park. This project will include tree installation, and seeding of native grasses and wildflowers in the open areas. Many decaying ash junipers have already been removed and mulched by a forestry mower. Volunteers will be needed to transplant seedlings of tree species from the adjacent forest that are not available from local nurseries. A very exciting addition to the project will be the installation of a solar powered irrigation system to get the new trees established. Date: First Saturday of every month Time: 9am-1pm Location: 907 Slaughter Ln., 78748. Please, come help us mulch 8 heritage trees at the South Hill and 2 heritage trees at the North Hill of Barton Springs Pool, Saturday February 11th, 8 am to 12 pm. The work is easy and it will help these trees survive the drought. The compost/mulch mix will be delivered close to the trees to facilitate the work. This is a fine mix that is easy to work with. Volunteers will rake the mulch under the trees. All are welcome, individuals and groups. However, the BSP South Hill is a sensitive area, so this event is restricted to high school students and adults that will follow instructions, to minimize erosion on the hills. We'll provide the tools and snacks. Please, bring your gloves and a water bottle if you can. Wear closed toe shoes. Dress for the weather. Lower Bull Creek Greenbelt Workdays2/19/12 The Lower Bull Creek Greenbelt, LBCG, which runs along Hwy 360 from near 2222 to Spicewood Springs Rd., is City of Austin parkland for which Bull Creek Foundation, BCF, has an adoption agreement with the Parks and Recreation Department, PARD. Under this agreement BCF volunteers maintain trails, pickup trash, remove wire fencing, and remove invasive plants such as ligustrum, Chinese tallow, chinaberry, nandina, and Japanese honeysuckle. Recent and ongoing projects include construction and deployment of park benches, trail maintenance and invasive plant removal, and ligustrum and wire removal. Recent participants include employees of local businesses, high school students, Boy Scouts, and residents.
