KAB provides resources and education to inspire individuals &
the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

2007 Highlights
Twelve organizations, including KAB, joined together to host the second annual Groundwater to the Gulf: Summer Institute for 47 educators on June 20 through 22. For three days teachers became students as they participated in hands-on activities, ventured on fieldtrips and tours, and heard from local experts.

Participants learned about water from the ground up, following its path from its Central Texas origins to its final destination in the Gulf of Mexico. Day one teachers explored groundwater issues first hand with a mini-caving trip at the Wildflower Center. Day one also included a KAB led workshop where teachers dug through compost and identified terrestrial bugs to discover how to garden for clean water. Thursday morning in the downpour or rain that proved how extreme water conditions can be in Central Texas, teachers ventured out to McKinney Falls State Park to conduct chemical water quality testing from LCRA staff and determined water quality by identifying macro-invertebrates with the help of Watershed Protection Staff. That afternoon participants explored the geology of the Edwards Aquifer at Barton Springs.Equipped with knowledge, water-based curricula, and resources teachers may return to their classrooms ready to take their students on water’s exciting journey.
