KAB provides resources and education to inspire individuals &
the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

Green Teens LogoMiddle and high school students participate in weekly activities to explore the outdoors, learn the truth about trash, and discover what's in our water. Activites are complimented with service projects. Students take action in their communities to mark storm drains, recycle, beautify their campuses, and restore creek and nature preserves while earning community service hours. As a Green Teen you can become eligible for a paid summer internship to mentor younger youth.

What is GREEN TEENS:

  • Youth ages 12 and up participate in weekly after-school activities to learn about water quality, gardening, recycling, alternative energy, and sound environmental practices.
  • Students take ownership of their communities through service projects while earning community service hours.
  • Field trips bring activities to life.
  • Teen leaders become eligible for a paid summer internship to mentor youth at KAB's Green Stewards Camp. 2011 Internship Highlights and Meet the 2011 Interns!

RESULTS:

Since Green Teens was launched in 2005, the program has become one of KAB's primary educational programs. We have expanded the program from three participating sites to six participating schools annually and the number of youth we reach has tripled from 42 annually to 124!

Green Teens also participate in student showcase days and Saturday workdays to engage community members and families in service projects, and to share their knowledge and brag about their accomplishments.

Our partners speak out about what they like most about Green Teens:

  • "I liked how the program was very hands-on and educated children about various subjects including healthy eating, composting, gardening and insect life."
  • "Thanks again for everything you guys have done for us at Bedichek. It is much appreciated."
  • " The apprenticeship offered the kids many realistic applications of how to 'green' their own lives and involved their families in real ways by having kids provide samples and take information back to their parents and siblings."
  • "Energy level of the instructor and instructional materials is great."

2011 Mighty Fine Campus Beautification Highlight
What does 4 volunteer projects, 55 volunteers, 178.50 service hours, and over $1200 in-kind donations look like? Mighty Fine (burgers, fries, shakes) knows as they defined service this September to beautify 2 participating Green Teens Schools - Martin Middle School and Fulmore Middle School. KAB's Green Teens selected as a Dell YouthConnect recipient
Twenty-four organizations based in the United States have been selected as Dell Youth Connect recipients. With Dell resources, Green Teens students will use Dell Streak 7 Tablets to plot invasive plants, design gardens, index litter, research current environmental issues, and blog about their weekly activities.
