2011 Good Sports Always Recycle Winner Highlights
Each year the Good Sports Always Recycle review committee is awed by all schools are doing on campus to go green. Recycling paper, print cartridges, cell phones, plastic, and aluminum; collecting rainwater, composting, and maintaining native garden beds is becoming the norm. What sets this year's Good Sports Always Recycle winners apart is how they are going beyond the basics and coming up with creative ways to go green. Read more…

Bryker Woods Elementary School
After winning five times in a row, Bryker Woods ES has made going green a way of life on campus. From recycling plastic bottles, coffee bags and glue sticks to composting in the cafeteria and in every, yes every classroom, they reduce and recycle their waste for a cleaner, greener campus. They even have a garden and 2,500 rain barrel! Bicycling is an activity many students take part in through the Boltage Move-to-School program where students are encouraged to bike to school, track their distance and park their bikes on the 50% more available bike racks. Now there are also year round bike trains that make getting to school that much more lean and green!

Canyon Creek Elementary School
These comets are flying towards sustainability! Canyon Creek ES sure is plugged in – they are now home to a solar powered battery bank and charging station, the second of its kind in Texas! Just last year they initiated plastic, glass and can recycling in addition to the paper recycling happening in all the classrooms. But recycling is just the beginning - the Watt Watcher patrol keeps record of the energy usage on campus and the Comets Who Care volunteer their time before and after school cleaning and taking care of their campus.

Forest Creek Elementary School
Recycling at Forest Creek ES sure is no joke – they recycle everything under the moon and aren’t afraid to howl about their success! We all know Texas is in a drought, and second graders have taken the initiative to collect water that is left inside plastic bottles that are thrown away and have collected over 30,000 bottles so far - that’s a lot of water measuring! Forest Creek is also getting greener by the day and square foot – thanks to a Lowes Garden Grant the school now boasts a square garden half of the student population!

Summit Elementary School
Summit ES continues to shine with sustainability year after year. Just last year, the Summit Earth Team was born, an after-school club for 4th & 5th graders. The Earth Team is not only working on reducing paper towel waste, they are also planning a No-Idling campaign. These eagles also have their very own household battery collection program, a plastic shopping bag recycling drive, Styrofoam recycling and not to mention a new annual 4th grade Wildflower Planting Project to beautify the campus! How green can they get? The sky is the limit!

Lake Travis High School
Leave it up to the Cavaliers at Lake Travis HS to pave the way for recycling on campus as the 2011 Paper Retriever Earth Day Challenge Winner. This accomplishment is just the first of many as students take the lead in sustainability and organize Earth Day carpool programs, lead “how to” recycle lessons for all ages and the National Honor Society students collect materials for terracycle brigades! Student band members even stay behind after football games to clean up the stands, whether it is a home or away game. Well played!

Coca-Cola Recycle Rookie Award – Fulmore Middle School
Fulmore MS is rising to the eco-occasion. In May of this year they built their very own garden and did an overhaul on the campus through a natural habitat installation! The PALS (Peer Assistance and Leadership group) continue to gain momentum and boasts 22 student members that engage in regular leadership training activities, participation in service projects and managing the garden. The Fulmore Falcons have expanded their recycling from cardboard, paper and plastic – to now recycle aluminum, batteries, ink and other materials! Good job Fulmore, you’re a star in sustainability and the winner of this year’s Coca-Cola Recycle Rookie Award!
