2005 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Winners

The six selected projects support Austin communities in their efforts to beautify and improve their neighborhoods by taking ownership of public spaces.

  • North Austin Civic Association recruited volunteers and built a partnership with Lanier High School to complete the installation of three neighborhood signs along North Lamar made from recycled steel as well as two native plant beds.
  • East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Planning Team enhanced their local kiosk with print and display materials to communicate with their local neighbors and landscaped around the kiosk.
  • Blackshear/Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association planted native/adapted plants at select intersections throughout the neighborhood to create a harmonious identity to their neighborhood.
  • Cherrywood Neighborhood Association plans to install a custom designed and volunteer constructed drinking fountain in Cherrywood Green and sow native plant specimen trees at the Concordia Triangle to replace a longstanding Cedar tree lost in a storm.
  • Pickle Elementary School involved students, local artist, and community members to install a mural on their campus wall to express the unique identity of their school and community
  • Brentwood Neighborhood Association installed four neighborhood markers to clearly identify the boundaries of Brentwood and to welcome visitors to the neighborhood.
  • Windsor Park Community created a community garden for neighbors young and old to gather and get to know each other and enjoy tending to their plants. The garden will be stocked with a rainwater collection system, a pond, and raised bed plots.

Each of these groups has demonstrated an exceptional capacity to galvanize neighborhood volunteers and to take an active role in improving their neighborhoods. KAB partners with them to provide technical assistance and ongoing support to see their projects to fruition.
