2007 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipients

Keep Austin Beautiful is proud to announce the 2007 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Winners. This year nine grants have been awarded funding totaling $10,000 to support neighborhood associations and community groups with efforts to beautify and improve public spaces. Now in its third year, the KAB beautification grants program has funded 24 projects, investing over $30,000 to support Austin communities.

  • South River City Citizens – will step up their efforts to remove invasive plants in Stacy Park and Blunn Creek Preserve and also seed Inland Sea Oats in the area to restore native groundcover.
  • Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association – will revitalize the north end of Nicholas Dawson Park which is currently overgrown and filled with debris. Landscaping for the area will be designed by local artist and architects through a design contest.
  • Friends of Willowbrook Reach – will install stonework hardscape and plant trees and shrubs to restore and protect some of the heavily eroded banks along upper Boggy Creek.
  • Gilbert/Hopi Neighborhood Group – will beautify a neighborhood median with native plants and trees and install an irrigation system to provide long-term maintenance for the plantings.
  • Deloney Street Community Garden Collective – will create a brand new community garden on a vacant lot in East Austin.  The project includes removing poison ivy, building raised beds, and installing a community pavilion to create a thriving community space and garden dedicated to food crops.
  • Campus Environmental Center – will transform areas of grass monoculture on the University of Texas Campus into a vegetable garden and native landscaping, and create unique educational signage to raise awareness about the importance of connecting with the environment.
  • West 35th Street Neighbors – will transform an unattractive and overgrown dead-end into a space fit for strolling and block parties, by installing native landscaping and creating a gateway connecting neighbors with nearby local businesses.
  • Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association – will implement a comprehensive and cohesive plan to design, install and maintain native landscapes at eleven right of way triangles in the neighborhood.
  • Chestnut Neighborhood Association – will plant over fifteen trees along Chestnut Street to provide shade, promote energy efficiency, and enhance the beauty of the neighborhood.

KAB would like to thank the City of Austin Dillo Dirt for their generous donations of compost and Austin Energy for donating trees to support KAB beautification projects.
