Chestnut Addition Neighborhood Association

2007 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

The Chestnut Addition Neighborhood Association (CANA) won a grant to plant native Texas trees in the Chestnut Community Park located at 2207 East 16th Street.  These trees not only beautify the park but also reduce the ambient temperature, create wildlife habitat, provide sound insulation, and create shade within the neighborhood’s only park.

Residents of the neighborhood came together on a cold winter day (prime Texas tree planting season) to dig holes, place trees, and insulate the soil with a nice layer of mulch.  They also built sturdy cages around the trees to protect them from weed eaters and kids wanting to swing on the young branches.

Volunteers continue to nurture the trees and water them regularly.  Thanks to all of their hard work, Chestnut Community Park is a more enjoyable place for neighbors to gather.
