Homewood Heights Neighborhood Association

2008 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

Homewood Heights is an Austin neighborhood planning group, working to proactively better the living conditions of the neighborhood and promote a sense of community among neighbors.  Homewood Heights Community Garden was founded in 2008 by neighbors interested in seeing an abandoned lot beautified and better utilized.

The Homewood Heights Community Garden (2606 Sol Wilson - 78702) will be designed to promote cooperation and shared bounty.  Priority will be given to planting shared crops over individual parcels, and neighbors will continue to share in the workload and eventually in the harvest, thus promoting a sense of community through common creative effort.  Individual parcels may be granted as demand and availability dictate.

KAB’s grant will provide two 30 gallon Texas Red Oak trees to accent the front entrance to the garden.

Future plans for the property include:

  • The front portion of the property, a heavily shaded area, will be set aside for shared space, neighborhood association meetings, gatherings, etc.  This space will span the width of the property to a depth of 38 feet from the street.  The area should be covered with weed barrier and cypress/cedar mulch to reduce weed growth, and will be furnished with additional trees and picnic tables.
  • Constructing steps from the entrance on Sol Wilson to the terraced plots.
  • Installing a gate and sign desgined by artists in the neighborhood.
  • Landscaping the front entrance with native and adapted plants including: Blackfoot Daisy, Fall Aster, Esperanza, Salvia, Lamb’s Ear, Rock Penstemon, & Purple Coneflower
