Plaza Saltillo

2008 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

The grant was originally awarded for UT students to design 3 bus stops emphasizing the culture and energy of the stops' location in the city, sustainable and recycled materials, and native drought tolerant plantings.  Due to logistical issues the grant funds have been redirected to landscape Plaza Saltillo (a MetroRail stop and community gathering space).  Landscape design will be overseen by local designers, Sara Pierce of Articulated Design & Ilse Frank, and the surrounding neighborhood will be involved in workdays and events.  Landscape installation is anticipated to occur in Fall 2009.

Plaza Saltillo is inspired by Mexican plazas and features beautiful metal benches donated by Austin’s sister city Saltillo, Mexico.  KAB grant funds will be used to re-landscape the flower beds with native drought tolerant plants that provide structure and movement to the design and are low maintenance.  As one of Captial Metro’s MetroRail stops, commuters will enjoy the transformation and an increase in community events at the Plaza is anticipated following the beautification efforts.
