Del Valle Community Coalition & Children's Wellness Center
2010 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

The Children’s Wellness Center provides primary medical care for over 3,000 low to low middle income children within Del Valle, Austin and Travis County. In August 2009, the clinic moved and the butterfly garden, built and donated by the clinic staff was left behind. The staff who had donated, hauled and dug as well as had cared for tended the garden, and the mothers and children expressed a desire for another garden, yet there was no funding available to replace the garden.  The impact of the previous garden was evident daily. Children and parents would look for the baby rabbits, pick the pumpkin flowers, remark upon the flowers never seen before (passion flowers), nibble green beans growing over the railings and just gaze and rest. It was enjoyable for all and very much appreciated. More than once, foundations touring the clinic exclaimed that the garden set the clinic a part and made the clinic a fun welcoming place.

The Keep Austin Beautfiul financial grant plus donation of 8 native trees from Austin Energy and 12 cubic yards of Dillo Dirt will be used to create a butterfly garden, plant native flowering vines to climb up railings, plant trees for shade, and incorporate native grasses into the design.  The installation of the garden will be the "1st annual Del Valle Community Dig In”.  The vision is the creation of an annual event where the community can work/play/dig together to build a positive and visible difference for the entire DV community.

Thanks to Far South Wholesale Nursery for donating extra plants!
