Friends of Mayfield Preserve

2010 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

The Friends of Mayfield Preserve dedicate their time to a wonderful natural area located in the heart of Austin, Mayfield Preserve. Mayfield Nature Preserve has been transformed within the last couple of years with a large scale project to removal all invasive plant species within the entire 22 acre preserve.

The Keep Austin Beautiful grant will support repair of an observation deck with recycled materials and native seeds and trees to re-vegetate areas where invasive plant species have been removed.

  • Taylor Slough Observation deck - The observation deck will be partially dismantled, modified slightly in design and rebuilt using recycled plastic deck boards.
  • Native seeds – Volunteers will scatter native seeds in needed areas. Volunteers love to scatter seed, particularly children. Reseeded areas over the last couple of years have recovered nicely and The Friends want to extend this success to more areas of the preserve.
  • Native Trees – Invasive ligustrum, privet and Chinese Pistache were removed in huge numbers throughout the entire preserve and native trees will be planted to speed the re-forestation with diverse native species.

These projects will encourage visitors to appreciate this lovely natural area which has already enjoyed such great outpouring of community support.
