J.J. Seabrook Neighborhood Association

2010 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient

The J.J. Seabrook Neighborhood Association will use KAB Grant funding to make substantial improvements to the basin known as the J.J. Seabrook Greenbelt to transform it into an environmentally friendly and recreationally useful neighborhood asset. The neighborhood’s ultimate vision for J. J. Seabrook Park and Pershing Drive is grand and will require a multistage plan of several years and this grant will give the vision a jump start.

Neighbors will enhance JJ Seabrook Greenbelt by increasing the animal and plant life found there. Funding will be used to install a purple martin housing system as well as some bat boxes and a chimney swift tower.  Small groupings of native plants will be used to accent these installations, and interpretive information will also be included.

The requested habitat for birds, bats, and native plants will accomplish many goals beyond providing needed habitat.  It will educate users about ecological concepts and promote ecological stewardship, help to control mosquitoes, it will promote physical activity and health in the area as more neighbors enjoy the park and it will beautify the park immensely. Neighbors also have many fun activities up their sleeves like hosting a bat box building workshop for neighbors to get to know each other and build their own bat boxes to take home.

Stay tuned for great updates from this neighborhood!
