NBG 2010 McKinley Heights NA
McKinley Heights Neighborhood Association 2010 Neighborhood Beautification Grant Recipient McKinley Heights is a small neighborhood in East Austin bordered on the north and south by MLK Jr Blvd and 12th Street and on the east and west by Harvey Street and Airport Blvd. Once the home of a long-lived and well-supported community garden, run by resident Hortense Lawson, McKinley Heights has a history of grass-roots neighborhood involvement. Problems with crime have been a burden to the group in recent years, but members of the McKinley Heights Neighborhood Association remain vigilant in their attempts to reclaim the streets and maintain the neighborhood that they love. Harvey Street is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, but suffers from illicit activity and general neglect due to a lack of resources. Several churches in the neighborhood with large active congregations keep the streets lively but problems on the street still remain. In order to reflect the pride that McKinley Heights residents feel about their neighborhood, they will volunteer top plant native trees to beautify and shade the street. . This grant project will focus on the beautification of Harvey Street, the neighborhood’s most significant thoroughfare. Stay tuned for planting days Fall 2010 or early Spring 2011.
