the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

In 2004, the I-35 Makeover Coalition was formed. A diverse group of citizens, businesses and neighborhood leaders wanted to improve the area underneath the I-35 bridge from 6th Street to 8th Street.  After years of trying to get the project underway, the group has finally succeeded! The revitalization will include a cleaner refinished parking lot with broader sidewalks lined with native plants and oak trees. A major focal point will also be the grand arching LED lighting fixtures that promise to be visually striking and able to provide safety to all parking petrons. The project will be funded by a combination of revenues generated from the parking fees from the lot and a $1.5 million resolution approved by Austin City Council in 2007. The city will be closing the lots one at a time to avoid parking constraints and the project is scheduled to be finished in January.Read more in this article from KVUE News...
