KAB provides resources and education to inspire individuals &
the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

Students at Hill Elementary School are learning about how litter affects our waterways, the role native plants play in preventing erosion, and soil composition. The activities are part of the schools participation in KAB’s Clean Creek Campus program that promotes environmental stewardship.

On Tuesday, March 23rd from 9:00am to noon the over 100 fourth graders transferred their knowledge into action to improve Bull Creek Greenbelt. Projects at the park included: clearing invasive grass to plant native wildflowers; removing over populated juniper tree;, trimming brush piles to fill low points for erosion control;  a cleanup of the park; and a scavenger hunt of the area, which presented an opportunity to tour the grounds and for students to better understand the impact of their project on their local watershed.

After a hard days work students and teachers were presented with a Clean Creek Campus banner to recognize their commitment to protecting Austin’s environment.

Clean Creek Campus is a partnership between Keep Austin Beautiful and the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. The program fosters student stewardship of our natural resources by engaging students in at least two hands-on, multidisciplinary activities that meet state education standards followed by completion of a service-learning project. Participating schools receive: hands-on activities led by KAB and WPDR, guidance in the planning and implementation of a project, project supplies, and a Clean Creek Campus banner. To date, twenty four schools have been designated as Clean Creek Campuses!

The Bull Creek Greenbelt service-learning project was made possible through the Clean Creek Campus program in collaboration with The Bull Creek Foundation to identify and coordinate specific projects that will best improve the park.
