KAB provides the following services to schools to promote campus recycling.

Bring Recycling into the Classroom (Now Scheduling for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011)
KAB leads hands-on activities on litter, recycling, and landfills. KAB also provides cardboard recycling bins and ongoing support to assist schools in the initiation and completion of a campus recycling project.

This fall, 5 schools from across the Greater Austin area will be recognized for their campus greening efforts. Winning schools receive cash prizes, a commemorative plaque and recognition at a UT football game!

Bikes
  • The Yellow Bike Project - 1216 Webberville Road, Austin, TX, 78721  Donated bikes are repaired and YBP helps repair volunteers build their own bikes
  • Bikes across Borders – repairs donated bikes and send them to places like Mexico, Cuba, and Central America.
  • Jack and Adam’s Bicycles – 1210 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704 Provide recycling bins that accept all bicycle related materials including workout clothes and shoes, rubber tubes and tires, and metal frames.  Donated items go to Yellow Bike, art groups, and local Austin businesses.
 
Cell Phones
  • *www.etcep.com – Fundraising opportunity.  Register online then send in recycled cell phones, inkjet, and laser cartridges to redeem fundraising earnings which are deposited into an online account.
  • *www.freerecycling.com – Fundraising opportunity. Offer free pick up service or shipping boxes for cell phones and cell phone batteries.  Also accept over 150 types of inkjet cartridges.
  • www.thinkgreen.com - 3920 Gattis School Rd, Ste. 112, Round Rock, TX 78664 – Free recycling for any used cell phones.

  • * TerraCycle – Fundraising opportunity.  Offers compensation for wrappers, yogurt containers, drink pouches and much more to remake them into office, home, and school products which can be purchased on their website. 
 
Crayons
  • Crazy Crayons – Nationwide drop off bins collect any used and unwanted crayons which are turned into new crayons of many creative shapes, colors, and sizes. 
 
Computers
  • *Axcess Technologies – 8606 Wall Street Bldg 14, Ste 300, Austin TX 78754 Offers compensation for most computer equipment such as circuit boards, mainframes, networking, test, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Best Buy – Accepts almost any electronic equipment including TVs, computers, batteries, cables, and cell phones. 
  • Computers 4 Kids – 2928 Manor Rd, Austin TX 78722.  Accept any computers, monitors, and computers and need hardware and software which are repaired and provided to underserved Texas students.
  • FITS Computer Recycling – Recycles any computer related electronic equipment and service the Austin, Houston, and Dallas areas. 
  • Goodwill Industries of Central Texas – Provide online list of electronic equipment that can be accepted for recycling at any Goodwill in Austin. 
  • Ecycling Central – Nationwide online database to locate electronic recycling resources. 
 
Grocery Bags (plastic)
  • * H-E-B – Offers $1 for each pound of properly cleaned and packed plastic bags which are recycled into trash bags that are sold at their stores.
  • Local grocery stores (look for marked bins at Randall’s, Wal-Mart and Central Market)

Styrofoam
  • HDi - 5330 Fleming Court, Suite 100, Austin, Tx.  Open 7am - 3pm Monday through Friday and accepts all LDPE #4 foam, plastic bags, and styrofoam except packaging peanuts (take those to FedEx).  
Corks
  • The Cork Project  - any Specs store - Accepts wine corks. Specs is working in partnership with TerraCycle to transform the corks into new products. 
 
Shoes
  • Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program – Individuals and groups can recycle shoes by mail, at any Nike retail store, or drop off locations.  Shoes are broken down and reused for basketball and tennis courts or tracks.

Get Creative!

  • Just Take Two – Encourage kids to conserve paper products by starting a campaign to reduce the amount of paper towels used to dry hands. 
  • Clothing Swap – Organize a Saturday clothing swap to get rid of clothes that don’t fit. 
  • Compost – A great way for students to discover a unique way of recycling.  Compost fruit and vegetables from the cafeteria to reduce the food waste that ends up in the landfill.  Use soil to grow or enhance a garden.
  • Trash Audit – Put the students math skills to work but conducting a trash audit to see just how much waste can be reduced with recycling and composting.  Trash audits give students a chance to take a close look at what they throw away and what percentage of their trash is food, recycling, and waste.
