Tree 2008 HighlightsX-Mas in April Nothing gets you in the Earth Week spirit like giving away trees to community groups. On Saturday, April 19th six energetic and knowledgeable volunteers from KAB, NWF Habitat Stewards, and the Capital Area Master Naturalists helped distribute trees to more than twenty groups. Along with lots of heavy lifting they also shared tid-bits of tree advice on site selection, planting, trimming, and more.
Home for the Holidays Just when some of the trees were starting to doubt that they’d find new homes by Earth Day, dozens of volunteers came forward to adopt them. 336 native trees found new homes in pocket parks, greenbelts, schools, and right of ways all over Austin and are busy putting down roots. Thanks to all of the volunteer-led groups who are taking care of these trees in public spaces: Akins HS, Andrews ES, Barton Creek Greenbelt Guardians, Austin Biodiversity Greenhouse, Bouldin Creek NA, Brentwood NA, Bull Creek Foundation, Clint Small MS, Copperfield Nature Trails Group, Friends and Lovers of Willowbrook Reach, Friends Meeting of Austin, Friends of Convict Hill Quarry Park, Friends of Eilers Park, Friends of Shipe Pool, Gracy Woods NA, Green Classroom, North Austin Civic Association, Northfield NA, NorthStar NA, Oak Hill Trails Association, PARD Main Office Habitat Demonstration Garden, Pecan Springs ES, Ridgetop ES, South East Austin Trails and Greenways Alliance, South River City Citizens, Southwood NA, Sunshine Community Gardens, & Violet Crown. Andrews Elementary School “On behalf of Andrews Elementary School, we would like to thank you so much for the opportunity to learn about the importance of trees. Our tree planting ceremony was a huge success and was featured on the 'Green Gardner' segment of Keye's evening news. Students were extremely enthusiastic about being able to participate in the planting process. This is all thanks to your generous donations. Thank you, thank you.” ~ Staci Golmon
Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association “Here is a picture of the latest work done at Nicholas Dawson Park as part of our KAB grant. You can see all of the trees and shrubs we planted on Sunday, April 20. After a week and good hard rains they are doing just fine. We also rescued a Texas persimmon, a pecan tree and cedar elm from the earlier work session in March. So the area is filling in nicely. The next phase is to develop a good ground cover planting and make a new fence along one side of the property line where the old concrete slab now lies. Thanks.” ~ Matt Coldwell
